Winner of the Scheme of the Month

Our scheme of the month for December is The 2009 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures.  First initiated by Michael Faraday in 1825, the Lectures have inspired generations of scientists, mathematician and engineers – from Professor Chris Bishop, chief research scientist for Microsoft Research and 2008 Christmas Lectures presenter to Peter Hadfield, this year’s winner of the title Young Scientist of the Year at the first National Science and Engineering Competition.   The scheme was chosen for its long-term, inspirational and lasting effect as a STEM intervention.  The most important feature of the Lectures is that they enable scientists and engineers to deliver practical-based, demonstration-led presentations on cutting-edge science and technology directly to young people at the Royal Institution in London and to thousands more on television.

The Lectures have been broadcast at Christmas on UK national television since the 1960s and this year will be broadcast on More 4 for the first time between 21 – 26 December.  For further information, go to
