The Wonderstruck Hovercraft Workshop
Wonderstruck
In-school visit
Pupils spend a day working in small teams to design and build their own working model hovercraft. Each team starts by building a prototype machine and carrying out a range of tests to isolate factors which improve the performance of their machine. They are then given a budget with which to design and build a Mk2 version. The workshop ends with teams giving presentation on the science and engineering behind their design and a 'Grand Prix' style race off to find the best machine. We can also run a shorter, half-day version of the workshop, without the budget element so we can fit two sessions into a day.

The Hovercraft workshop is fantastic and worked well with our group of 11-16 year olds. The group really got immersed making their crafts and absolutely loved racing them! A really fun and interactive session and when we visited the real Hovercraft I was amazed at how much they had learnt and remembered. I would recommend without hesitation.
Absolutely fantastic day, thank you for all that you did for our Able Year 8 students.
We’re going to follow it up with a trip to the Hovercraft Museum in the summer. Many students are now goign to join our STEM Club too, which is another great outcome of the day.
Fun, info-loaded, practical, hands-on, safe, inspiring…..what more can a student want!
