Active Approaches to PCR for A-Level
Out-of-school Activity
Running time: 4 - 8 hrs
Preparation time: < 1 hr
Cost: £150/day for 12 students (state schools) £500 for 12 students (independent schools)
Students will enter a simulated scene where they work as scientists carrying out a mini project about diagnostic genetic tests. Using PCR and gel electrophoresis they will test DNA for errors which increase the likelihood of a patient developing breast cancer. The course will help develop the students’ understanding of adequate controls and robust techniques to ensure that scientists can provide patients with accurate test results. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss the importance of diagnostic tests and the ethical dilemmas presented.
You can choose to couple with a short outdoor adventure activity to enhance the experience further.
